SC seeks report from OGRA over 17 CNG stations in three KM radius

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Thursday sought report from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) over establishing of 17 CNG stations in a radius of only three kilometer in Gujranwala district.The apex court also took strict notice of a CNG station in Johar Town area of Lahore which was set up adjacent to a school building ignoring all rules and regulations.A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry and Justice Iqbal Hameed-ur Rehman resumed hearing of a Suo-Motu case regarding illegal awarding of CNG licenses on large scale during the previous government.The bench noticed that there was a cluster of CNG stations on GT road even though there was severe shortage of gas in the country.The Chief Justice remarked it seems as if there were no rules and regulations for establishing CNG stations.During the course of proceeding, Chairman OGRA Saeed Ahmed Khan categorically stated that after taking charge in February last year he had not issued even a single license for establishing a CNG station.The Chief Justice questioned Chairman OGRA about the total number of CNG stations in the country upon which he informed that currently there were 3395 functional CNG stations throughout the...
