SC seeks speedy process to make ordinance for expatriates

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Attorney General for Pakistan and the Law Ministry to speed up the process for issuing an ordinance to give the right of franchise to the expatriates.The three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry comprising Justice Gulzar Ahmad and Justice Sh Azmat Saeed resumed hearing of identical constitutional petitions of Imran Khan and others.During the course of proceedings, the Chief Justice remarked that it was the desire of Constitution not that of the Supreme Court and it was court's obligation to follow the Constitution.Deputy Attorney General Ali Zai informed the court of the government's concern that granting voting rights to overseas Pakistanis was near to impossible as it needed much time. The software was untested and the real problem was its testing, which was not possible before polling date. The Chief Justice observed that prima facie the government was not serious to provide voting rights to the overseas Pakistanis.
