World community to watch Pakistan's May polls with interest: UNGA chief

NEW YORK: The President of the UN General Assembly, Vuk Jeremic, has described Pakistan as a "vibrant democracy", and said the international community would be watching the upcoming elections with great interest."Pakistan is a strong pillar of stability in the region," he said at a largely-attended reception hosted jointly by the Pakistan UN Ambassador Masood Khan and Consul General Faqir Asif Hussain on Monday evening.The completion by Pakistan's democratically elected government of its full five-year term was a significant event that paved the way for the May polls, said Jeremic, a former foreign minister of Serbia.The 193-member Assembly president spoke after Ambassador Masood Khan, in his welcoming address, told cheering diplomats, UN officials, and members of the the Pakistani community that Pakistan was in an "election mode"."As we celebrate this day, the whole Pakistani nation is agog with expectation," the Pakistan envoy said. "Expectations pinned on our elections, which will take place 40 days from now."But, Masood Khan also said that Pakistan was under attack from terrorists with a dark agenda. "We are good guys in tough neigbourhood," he remarked. "We are fighting by all means to win. We are giving sacrifices in blood and money. But we will prevail....
