Agri Chamber concerns over water shortage

HYDERABAD: The Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA) has expressed grave concern over persistent water shortage in the Indus river, affecting irrigation of the agricultural lands at the start of Kharif season.A meeting of the SCA here Friday, chaired by its Senior Vice- President Akhund Ghulam Muhammad Siddiqui, urged the federal and the provincial governments to address the growers' concern on priority basis."If the water supply could not increase within a time, the sowing of Kharif crops like rice will be in great trouble," he observed.Siddiqui also blamed the inefficiency of the irrigation authorities including Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority (SIDA) and Sindh Irrigation Department for not properly handling the situation. The meeting also demanded raising the cotton procurement rate to Rs 4,000 per 40 kilogramme, citing the enhanced expenditure on the crop's cultivation.Copyright APP (Associated Press of Pakistan), 2013
